One thing that I’ve come to love throughout my time at Beacon of Hope is helping my clients revive their identity in Christ. To do this, I start with the topic of names. Throughout life we are given names. For instance, my first name is Sabrina, and that was the name given to me by my parents at birth. As time went on, I began to embody more names given to myself, such as friend, sister, daughter, student, etc.
While these names listed tend to have positive annotations associated with them, more times than not, the names I began to manifest as I grew up were not so healthy. Before I rooted my identity in Christ, it only took one time for a destructive name to be said for my identity to be rooted in it. And for most of my clients, that’s also the case. Actually, I bet that is the case for most people this side of heaven. The devil plays a nasty trick by poking at the most detrimental, wounded parts of our hearts. Therefore, one vile name to the wound can cause years of indescribable pain and heartbreak. Names such as low-life, stupid, unwanted, disastrous, unlovable, and not good enough begin to lay the foundation of our heart posture.
All that said, when we repeatedly hear negative names thrown at us we begin to believe that they are the truth. But, there is one mighty thing that destroys the lies: God Almighty. Being able to guide my clients through the process of what God has named them is so empowering. The names anointed on us by our Father in Heaven are powerful, healing, and restorative. Here are some of my favorites…
You are Chosen by God: Colossians 3:12-
“I am chosen of God, holy and dearly love…” God made each of us, chose each of us, and loves each of us. He wants us!
You are Beloved: Song of Songs 2:16-
“My beloved is mine and I am His…” We are dearly loved by God. God is in love with us!
You are God’s Masterpiece: Ephesians 2:10-
“For we are God’s handiwork…” Wow, how cool is it to understand that we are an artistic masterpiece designed by God!
You are God’s Treasure: 1 Peter 2:9-
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…” We are God’s special possession!
With all of this in mind, I believe this earthly world makes it so easy for us to root our identity in it. Nonetheless, the redemption and power that comes from rooting our identity in Christ alone is indescribable and oh so powerful!
Sabrina began her internship at Beacon in January and enjoys working with kids and teens. In her free time, you’ll find her hanging with friends & family, hiking, visiting coffee shops, and going to the beach.
